One of the pioneers in Spain: expertise and experience in MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery).
Implantación de Cirugía de Glaucoma Mínimamente Invasiva (MIGS) como novedad en España. 2

Traditionally, one of the most difficult conditions to manage and with one of the worst prognoses in ophthalmology is glaucoma. Traditional surgeries including aqueous shunts and trabeculectomies incur a host of complications such as dangerously low pressures, infections, scarring and repeat interventions, both surgically or with laser.

In order to manage these, ophthalmologists endure many sleepless nights ensuring that the patient reaches a safe balance between a low enough pressure to prevent progression of the damage from glaucoma and not too low to endure grave complications of ´hypotony´ (widely considered to be pressure lower than 6mmHg).

New surgical devices: minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.

The last few years have seen an explosion of new surgical devices which enable surgeons to implant them through extremely tiny incisions, akin to keyhole surgery elsewhere in the body. These devices all belong to a family of instruments termed ´minimally invasive glaucoma surgery´.

Dr. Gurjeet Jutley has recently commented that these devices have a great safety profile and if chosen well in the correct patients can achieve excellent pressures and halt propagation of Glaucoma, without the serious risks of traditional surgeries.

Pioneers in Region de Murcia: implementation of MIGS and topical anesthesia.

We are extremely pleased to share that last week, our surgical team at Clinica Guirao were one of the first people in the whole of Spain to implant one of these minimally invasive devices and one of the few who did so under topical anaesthesia. Doctor Maria Concepcion Guirao Navarro explains that the advantage of topical anaesthesia in such surgeries is the patient has quicker recovery, less discomfort and less likely to endure complications of anaesthesia, such as inadvertently injecting a muscle.

It’s with great excitement that Clinica Guirao can bring such advances to our patient care to the region, and beyond, with expertise and experience through many years of implanting such devices both in the United Kingdom and Spain. Dr. Gurjeet Jutley shares that the key to success is patient selection, careful gonioscopic assessment, weighing up the disease profile and of course meticulous surgical technique.

Clinica Guirao is really excited to be innovators in bringing a standard of excellence to Murcia and honoured to offer patients a range of surgical options depending on the condition.
