CLÍNICA GUIRAO TREATMENTS
cataract
¿What is a cataract?
Cataract, a common eye condition, occurs when the clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to classic symptoms of blurry vision, cloudy vision, and glare when looking at lights.
Pre-operatively
With cataracts existing within a spectrum of densities and maturation, the pre-operative assessment is key. We at Clinica Guirao are meticulous in our measurements, tests and discussions in selecting the safest and correct choice for you. Within the clinic, we analyse the results obtained and discuss options of:
- Premium lenses to achieve spectacle independence, including multi-focal IOLs, accommodative IOLs and toric IOLs.
- Planning of the surgery itself, which could require combination surgery for example with glaucoma surgery, retinal surgery, corneal surgery, etc.
- Surgical techniques required, whether this be small incision sutureless cataract surgery, extracapsular cataract extraction or phacoemulsification. Meticulous examination of the type of cataract an individual has enables our surgeons to make the safest decision for the patient.
Cataract Surgery Process
At Clinica Guirao, the surgery is tailored for each individual. We recognise that each person is unique and indeed the cataract is different in each case, hence we believe that the surgical journey should be personalised.
The vast majority of surgeries are undertaken with drops alone, avoiding injections and facilitating quicker recovery. With small incisions and self-sealing wound constructions, stitches are usually not required. With an expert anaesthetist always present, the patient can choose to have sedation and in certain circumstances, a general anaesthetic.
The actual surgery entails removing the cloudy lens, usually using an ultrasound probe. An acrylic implant is selected to match the patient’s visual requirements and implanted in the eye to replace the natural lens which had become cloudy.
Day Operation with Minimal Disruption
Cataract surgery is typically performed as a day operation, with patients returning home the same day. The procedure itself lasts 20-30 minutes, including the anaesthesia which can include drops alone or an injection around the eye. For those who prefer or medical co-morbidities dictate, sedation or general anaesthesia is of course available.
Post-Surgery Recovery
Following surgery, our surgeons tailor a personalised regime of drops and ¨do´s and don’ts¨ in order to ensure the surgery is not compromised and the best outcome is achieved. Most patients can return to work the day after surgery, provided they continue using prescribed eye drops. Full recovery typically takes two to three weeks, ensuring the eye heals completely and vision improves.
