CLÍNICA GUIRAO TREATMENTS
glaucoma
What is glaucoma?
It may be surprising to hear that glaucoma is not just one disease but rather a collection of conditions, all with the common endpoint of optic nerve damage. This nerve is fundamental in passing information from the outside environment all the way to our brain in order for us to interpret our environment and ultimately have vision.
Intra-ocular pressure and gluacoma
Glaucoma is closely linked to the pressure in the eye (intra-ocular pressure) for two major reasons:
- High pressure is the major cause to the development and progression of Glaucoma
- Secondly, as surgeons we can only treat pressure to prevent the propagation of disease.
What treatments exist for the management of glaucoma?
Treatment options can be broad broadly categorised into three groups:
- Medical
- Laser
- Surgical
Identification
The job of a skilled ophthalmologist is to identify what type of glaucoma is present, how advanced the disease is and what is the best choice of management to prevent the disease from progressing further. Sadly, glaucoma cannot be reversed and hence early intervention is always most ideal and sought after by the ophthalmologist.
One of the pioneers in Spain in introducing minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
At Clinica Guirao, we are proud to be one of the pioneers in the whole of Spain in introducing minimally invasive glaucoma surgery to our patients. We have experience and audited results in many centres of excellence in the UK including London and Oxford, using a plethora of different stents and lasers to achieve a reduction in pressure and subsequently preserving sight. Most recently in early 2024, we were delighted to collaborate with Alcon in implanting a Hydrus device under topical anaesthesia, which was a first for the region.
How does glaucoma affect the family?
Since glaucoma has a strong genetic component, the extended family must have comprehensive examinations and investigations to exclude the presence of disease. The personalised approach to management, intervention and monitoring is something we pride ourselves in at Clinica Guirao.
