strabismus
What is strabismus?
This word refers to the lack of ocular alignment. Family members or the patient themselves may notice the deviation of one or both eyes.
There are many types of strabismus, but they can generally be divided into the following groups:
Esotropias
It is the medical term for convergent or “inward” deviation of the eyes.
Exotropias
It is the medical term for convergent or “inward” deviation of the eyes.
Hypertropias or hypotropias
This term refers to the vertical deviation of the eyes.
Within these three groups there are also different types of strabismus, which have different peculiarities and treatment options.
Paralytic strabismus
Around the eye there are six muscles that respond to signals sent by three nerves: the third, fourth, and sixth nerves. If any of these nerves are damaged as a result of lack of blood supply, too much pressure on that nerve, or trauma or problems to the head, the result is a lack of movement of one or more muscles and eye deviation or strabismus.
What treatments exist for the treatment of strabismus?
Depending on the type of strabismus, the patient’s age and other factors, treatment may be with glasses, lenses and/or surgery.
How long does it take to recover from strabismus surgery?
The first three days are usually the most annoying. For a month you may feel a sensation of a foreign body or grit. Applying the drops during this time will help relieve symptoms.
