Retinal Diseases: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments
The retina can be thought of as the wallpaper lining the back of the eye, in reality comprised of neuronal cells in multiple layers of very close proximity. The central retina is like a dart-board, with the macula analogous to the bullseye. The macula is important for fine, central vision. If the macula has pathology, the symptoms manifested include distorted vision, objects appearing smaller and generalized blurry vision.
The conditions we see frequently affecting the macula that are amenable to surgical correction include fluid, folds of the macula and holes.
Fluid
Whilst there is a plethora of different causes for macula fluid, age related degeneration of the macula of the wet variety requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. The success of managing patients with medication directly into the vitreous cavity has maintained the vision of many patients worldwide.
Epiretinal membranes
If you can imagine a piece of cellophane, whilst all attempts are made to the contrary, eventually it always crinkles! This is similar to having an epiretinal membrane, whereby this forms on the surface of the retina, crinkling and changing the regular contour of the macular surface. Removal surgically is required to restore the normal state.
Macular hole
This is again a condition that needs timely intervention otherwise the visual prognosis will be poor. The hole requires surgical closure and tamponade.
Here at Clinica Guirao, members of our team are adept at managing conditions of the macula. Furthermore, patients who have innate susceptibility to the lens inside the eye moving or having sustained trauma, we have specialists who are able to remove the dislocated complex and insert a new lens to restore sight.
