Paediatric ophthalmology is one of the most challenging yet rewarding subspecialties within the field of eyes. The ophthalmologist has an opportunity to make a huge impact in the quality of the life of a child for many years, whilst at the same time having the distinct pleasure to develop a lifelong relationship with the patient. We at Clinica Guirao are very fortunate to have a subspecialty paediatric ophthalmologist who has had extensive training in the United Kingdom, within centres such as Oxford University Hospital and University Hospitals Birmingham. Dra Guirao is now one of the few specialists in childhood Glaucoma, as well as all facets of paediatric ophthalmology, within Spain.

Given that the eye and brain develop together in youth, it is critical for this process to occur optimally and avoid disruption of this process called amblyopia. An extensive assessment with Dra Guirao can ensure conditions impeding this development are diagnosed and treated to precent long term sequalae. Such conditions can range from a simple refractive error (corrected with spectacles) to complex strabismus requiring muscle surgery. Severely blinding conditions requiring prompt interventions such as paediatric cataract, glaucoma and lid abnormalities are expertise that we offer here at Clinica Guirao.

Children are of course affected by other conditions which may not themselves be sight but can cause significant discomfort and more morbidity. Common conditions that we see in Murcia are allergic eye disease, conjunctivitis and blepharitis. We understand the difficult journey both parents and children have with all eye conditions and as a consequence we give a personalised approach for each patient with compassion and empathy at the root of our consultations.
