At Clínica Guirao we are proud to share some exciting news: Dr. María Concepción Guirao Navarro is participating as an invited speaker at the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC 2026), held from 26 to 29 June 2026 in Prague. It is the most prestigious ophthalmology meetings in the world and, in this 40th edition, it features representation from our clinic.

Dr. Guirao talk is on the 26 June , entitled “The Pediatric Glaucoma Suspect”, as part of a symposium devoted to glaucoma and uveitis in childhood. She shares the panel with colleagues from Finland, the United States, Brazil and India, in one of the leading forums in paediatric ophthalmology.

What is WOC 2026?

The World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) is organised by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and brings together thousands of ophthalmologists, researchers and eye care professionals from around the globe. Its 40th edition takes place at the Prague Congress Centre, with a scientific programme spanning every ophthalmic subspecialty, from cataract and glaucoma surgery to retina and children’s eye care. The invitation speaks volumes about the excellent work that Dr Guirao is undertaking daily in Murcia.

What does “glaucoma suspect” mean?

Glaucoma is a disease that progressively damages the optic nerve, often linked to raised intraocular pressure, and it can affect vision silently. A “glaucoma suspect” is when someone shows signs or risk factors —slightly elevated pressure, an optic nerve that looks suspicious , or a positive family history— but does not yet have a confirmed diagnosis. Early detection and early treatment can be sight saving in a glaucoma suspect patient.

Glaucoma in children: signs worth knowing

There are subtle signs in children that should alert families to attend for an eye assessment: excessive tearing with no clear cause, strong sensitivity to light (photophobia), a tendency to close or squeeze the eyes, or an eye that looks larger or cloudier than normal.

The key lies in following up the “suspect” patient: regular check-ups, eye pressure measurement and optic nerve evaluation. In very young children, that examination calls for time, patience and experience.
